South Eastern University medical faculty can be established in Thirukkovil: MP Kodeeswaran

The medical faculty of the South Eastern University can be established in the Thirukkovil area, as land suitable for the purpose is available there, said Digambaram Kodeeswaran, Ampara District Member of Parliament representing the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi.

He made this observation while participating in the debate on a Private Member’s Motion moved by Sri Lanka Muslim Congress MP M.L.A.M. Hizbullah regarding the establishment of a medical faculty at the South Eastern University, during the parliamentary sitting held on 11 September.

Speaking further, he said:

“This motion is particularly important at the present juncture. More than 1,300 doctors have left the country for overseas employment. As a result, the number of doctors and medical specialists in the country has declined. Therefore, we need to establish new medical faculties.

“When establishing a medical faculty at the South Eastern University, the Kalmunai North Hospital could be used as the teaching hospital required for the faculty. In addition, the medical faculty could be established in the Thirukkovil area, where suitable land is available.

“The Thirukkovil Base Hospital could also be upgraded and converted into a teaching hospital,” he said.
