Committee on Public Finance Chairman Harsha de Silva has instructed officials to pay particular attention to strengthening regulatory measures to prevent illegal activities in Colombo Port City and safeguard the country’s international reputation.

He also called for special attention to be given to issues that have emerged in recent times in connection with the Port City project.

The Committee discussed approvals granted to businesses designated as strategically important in Colombo Port City, future investment proposals and the current status of apartment development projects in the area.

The matters were discussed at a recent meeting of the Committee on Public Finance held in Parliament under the chairmanship of MP Dr. Harsha de Silva.

The meeting examined the investment promotion activities of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission, the regulation of foreign investments and related legal and administrative matters.

Updated information was presented on businesses recently notified as strategically important and on proposed future investments. The current status of apartment projects in Port City and the sale of apartments were also discussed.

Officials of the Commission said nine plots of land valued at US$1.12 billion had so far been leased to promote investment in the area adjoining Colombo’s main commercial district.

They added that planning was under way to lease a further six plots valued at US$1 billion.
