29-Oct-2026.
The Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) and the Democratic Tamil National Alliance have agreed to jointly organise a major protest against the Government's proposed legislation to protect the State from terrorism and the proposed legislation to prevent organised crime.
A meeting between representatives of the two political groups was held at the Jaffna residence of Suresh Premachandran on 28 October 2026.
ITAK was represented by C.V.K. Sivagnanam and M.A. Sumanthiran, while the Democratic Tamil National Alliance was represented by Suresh Premachandran, Dharmalingam Siddharthan, Ratnalingam, Venthan and Chandrakumar.
ITAK General Secretary M.A. Sumanthiran said the meeting was part of the parties' regular monthly discussions. He added that it had been decided to instruct members of both groups to work together in local government institutions.
The two sides also reached an agreement to jointly organise a major protest against the recently proposed legislation to protect the State from terrorism and the proposed legislation to prevent organised crime, he said.
Meanwhile, a parliamentary select committee dealing with provincial council elections has invited the secretaries of all political parties to meet it on separate dates. In this connection, the two groups decided to emphasise that provincial council elections should be held without delay, while discussions on the electoral system could continue in parallel.
The meeting also discussed issues affecting the Tamil people, including enforced disappearances, mass graves, the Mayilathamadu–Madhavanai grazing land dispute and the release of land. The two sides discussed working together to address these concerns and find solutions.
