The United Nations has welcomed the Sri Lankan Government's decision to appoint an independent committee to investigate the recent violence at Negombo Prison, expressing hope that its findings will contribute to lasting prison reforms.

In a statement, UN Resident Coordinator Marc-André Franche conveyed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. He noted that both inmates and prison officers deserve adequate protection, as those in custody remain under the State's responsibility.

The UN said the incident underscored the urgent need to address overcrowding, poor detention conditions and systemic challenges within Sri Lanka's prison system. It reaffirmed its commitment to supporting prison reforms through technical cooperation aimed at improving prison management, security, detention conditions and staff welfare.
