The Japanese government has announced two new projects aimed at strengthening climate resilience among vulnerable communities in Sri Lanka and promoting gender equality, allocating USD 2.6 million through its supplementary budget to implement the initiatives.

The projects will be carried out in partnership with the Sri Lankan government through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sri Lanka. UNDP expressed confidence that the projects will make a significant contribution towards sustainable recovery from natural disasters and inclusive national development.

Under the first project, USD 1.5 million has been allocated to establish climate-resilient dairy infrastructure. The project is designed to integrate green technologies, sustainable farming practices, and market-based solutions to reduce emissions, increase milk production, and build adaptive capacity among vulnerable communities.

The initiative will be implemented with policy guidance from the Ministry of Rural Development and Social Security, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Ministry of Power. UNDP said around 750 small-scale dairy farmers will directly benefit, while over 5,000 individuals including family members, interested young agricultural entrepreneurs, livestock officers, veterinary experts, and local milk collectors will benefit indirectly.

The second project has been allocated USD 1.16 million to strengthen gender sensitivity and empower female deminers in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. UNDP stated that the project will particularly enhance the capacity of women engaged in demining activities in the Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts. The main objective is to support sustainable livelihood recovery among communities in the North and East.
