Digital Ministry Issues Warning on Scams Targeting Personal Data

The Ministry of Digital Economy has issued an urgent alert warning the public against scams impersonating the Department of Registration and Vital Statistics. Fraudsters are reportedly using phone numbers resembling the official line to steal personal information.

The Ministry emphasised avoiding responses to suspicious calls or messages. Numbers imitating the department (+94115226126 and +0115226126) and WhatsApp messages are being used by unknown individuals to collect sensitive personal data. Officials from the department never make such calls. Citizens are urged not to share personal information, including national ID details, with such callers and to report suspicious contacts to authorities.
