Case Against Ranil and Saman Ekanayake Adjourned to November 11

The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court has adjourned until November 11 the case filed against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe and his former Presidential Secretary Saman Ekanayake over their alleged misuse of Rs.16.6 million in government funds to undertake a visit to the United Kingdom.
The order was issued when the case was taken up before Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasekara on September 30, 2026. Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Saman Ekanayake, the accused in the case, were present in court.
During the hearing, Senior State Counsel Samadhari Piyasena, appearing for the Attorney General’s Department, informed the court that the investigations into the incident had now been completed and that the relevant case files had been forwarded for the consideration and advice of the Attorney General.
The Senior State Counsel requested the court to provide a suitable date on which the Attorney General’s position regarding further proceedings in the case could be communicated to the court.
After considering the submissions made before the court, the Fort Magistrate ordered that the case be taken up again on November 11 and directed the State Counsel to submit the Attorney General’s position and advice to the court on that date.
The case was filed by the Criminal Investigation Department following a complaint alleging that former President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Saman Ekanayake, who served as his Secretary, had unlawfully misused Rs.16.6 million belonging to the Government during their tenure to undertake the foreign trip.
