TNPF Urges Udhayanidhi Stalin to Press Centre on Sri Lankan Tamil Issues
05-Jul-2026.
A delegation of the Tamil National People's Front (TNPF), led by MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, met Tamil Nadu Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi Stalin during its official visit to Tamil Nadu.
The delegation recalled a letter sent by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February, outlining the political aspirations of Sri Lankan Tamils. It urged Udhayanidhi Stalin to mobilise all political parties in Tamil Nadu to press the Central Government to oppose efforts to strengthen Sri Lanka's unitary constitutional framework.
The TNPF reiterated that a lasting political solution should recognise Tamils as a distinct people with the right to self-determination within a federal structure. It also called on India to support an independent international investigation into allegations of genocide against Tamils.
The delegation further urged action to resolve the long-standing fisheries dispute between Indian and Sri Lankan fishermen and sought durable solutions to the humanitarian concerns of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees living in Tamil Nadu.
It also proposed the formation of an all-party representative committee in Tamil Nadu to facilitate wider consultations and convene a conference focused on the political future and national issues of Sri Lankan Tamils.
