Reunification Possible if ITAK Joins: Sumanthiran

President’s Counsel M. A. Sumanthiran, Media Spokesperson and Acting General Secretary of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK), stated that the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) could be re-formed only if the Democratic Tamil National Alliance (DTNA) agrees to ITAK’s stated position.
Following ITAK’s Central Working Committee meeting held in Vavuniya on November 5, Sumanthiran addressed the media, saying the party discussed the upcoming national budget, expected to be presented by the President (as Finance Minister) on November 7.
He explained the parliamentary budget process, including debates and voting stages, noting that ITAK has not yet made a final decision regarding its position and will decide after the second reading in consultation with its political and parliamentary groups.
Sumanthiran also said ITAK leaders had previously held discussions with leaders of the Democratic Tamil National Alliance.
“If they accept our stance,” he said, “there is a possibility of working together again under the banner of the Tamil National Alliance, as we did before.”
He added that the Central Committee had approved extending an invitation for cooperation to both the DTNA and the Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF), emphasizing unity among Tamil political factions toward a common political solution.
Sumanthiran also revealed that ITAK has requested a meeting with the President to discuss political solutions, and a 10-member delegation (including eight MPs) has been appointed for that purpose. However, the President has not yet responded.
He further stated that ITAK would not join the joint opposition protest planned for November 21, although it may collaborate with other parties on specific issues like holding Provincial Council elections and repealing the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).
