China is secretly building a massive new island in the South China Sea
20-Jun-2026.
Antelope Reef, a sandbar in the South China Sea, has been transformed by China into a 600-hectare artificial atoll with infrastructure capable of supporting a runway.
While Beijing claims the project supports local economy, it resembles a military base amidst territorial disputes, particularly with Vietnam over the Paracels. This expansion follows previous land reclamation efforts halted in 2015 likely due to international pressure.
The project signals a new phase in regional influence, emphasizing the strategic importance of physically reshaping contested maritime territories.
