Durgapur survivor's classmate arrested

The West Bengal Police on October 14 arrested the classmate of the medical student who accompanied her on the night she was raped in a forest in Durgapur area. 

The classmate, Wasif Ali, is the prime accused in this case and had raped her when she went out with him for dinner, as per the survivor's complaint.

The 23-year-old medical student from Jaleswar in Odisha was allegedly dragged into a forest near her college, threatened and raped on the night of October 10. Ali was also named in a complaint filed by the survivor's father. He will be produced before the court on October 15.

The survivor had returned to the hostel with Ali after the incident, and he had been under the scanner of police since the first day. He was being questioned by police for the last four days. 

Meanwhile, cops ruled out gang-rape and said one person sexually assaulted the student. 

Sunil Kumar Chowdhury, Police Commissioner of the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate, said that based on the survivor's statement and initial physical evidence, it has been established that only one person sexually assaulted the medical student.
