Civil Society Opposes Mannar Wind Power Project; Calls for Democratic Protest
11-Aug-2025.

Representatives of civil society in Mannar district expressed firm opposition to the government’s plan to build a new wind power tower and excavate mineral sand on Mannar Island, stating the people will unite democratically to protect their land and livelihoods.
A special press conference was held on August 8 in Mannar, attended by V.S. Sivakarn (Chairman, Mannar District Public Organizations Union), human rights activist Arutthandhai S. Jayabalan, Marcus Adhikari (leader of Mannar Public Group), and N.M. Alam (fisherfolk representative).
Sivakarn said parliamentary discussions included 15 MPs from the Northern and Eastern provinces and ministers who met with Mannar civil groups to discuss the wind power tower project.
Despite their requests, officials and ministers showed no willingness to seriously consider the concerns raised. False and misleading information was presented by Electricity Board officials, which the civil groups strongly rejected.
The government insists on continuing the projects despite opposition, claiming prior agreements with Hills Company. Ministers have promised to meet the President in two weeks to resolve the issue, but no official suspension has occurred.
The groups warn the projects threaten local lives and lands, accusing government agencies of dividing the people with minor incentives to gain support.
They urge people to unite and protest democratically to safeguard their rights, livelihoods, and land, expressing distrust in the government’s promises.
