Canadian organisation urges protection for Tamil political prisoners

The Canada-based Canadians for Justice and Equity organisation has urged the Sri Lankan Government to ensure the safety of Tamil political prisoners amid growing concerns over prison overcrowding.

In a statement issued by its representative Roy Samathanam, the organisation said severe congestion in prisons had increased the vulnerability of detainees, particularly Tamil political prisoners. It called on the Government to establish dedicated protection mechanisms, keep families informed of prisoners' safety and allow independent international monitoring to safeguard their rights and wellbeing.
