121 people rescued after Maavil Aru bund breach

Rescue operations for those trapped by the Maavil Aru bund breach were carried out under the direct supervision of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

A total of 121 people have been rescued through aerial operations, the Presidential Media Division announced.

A monk from Thangaveli village contacted the president by phone, urging immediate evacuation of about 1,000 people. Evacuations were carried out in the night of November 30 in Muttur and Neelapola.

Kinniya town is completely flooded, with some residents climbing trees to survive. The Navy has launched rescue operations.

Somapura, Sirimangalapura, Kalyar and Dehiwatta have been affected. Residents have been airlifted to Serunuwara Navodaya School and temporarily sheltered at Seruwavila Rajamaha Viharaya.
