US to cap foreign students' stay
17-Jul-2026.
The US Department of Homeland Security has finalized a rule replacing the 'duration of status' system for international students with fixed stays, generally up to four years for F-1 visa holders.
Extensions must be approved before expiry, affecting over 1.2 million international students, including 330,000 Indians. The regulation also applies to J-1 and I visa holders, aiming to enhance oversight and national security.
Critics warn it may cause uncertainty and risk unlawful status if extensions are delayed. The rule awaits congressional review before implementation.
