A special discussion was held at the Ministry on June 18 between a delegation led by World Bank Sri Lanka Country Manager Gevorg Sargsyan and Minister of Ports, Civil Aviation and Energy Anura Karunathilaka, focusing on infrastructure development and future financing models.
The meeting placed particular emphasis on development of the Colombo Port and private sector participation. The World Bank representative noted that the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank are jointly conducting a study on port infrastructure improvements, including proposals to develop the East Container Terminal as a separate entity, subject to Attorney General’s advice.
The Minister stressed the need for an independent, commercially flexible structure that protects employee welfare while ensuring trade union consensus.
Officials noted that global attention has shifted toward the Colombo Port due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Discussions also covered restructuring of SriLankan Airlines and domestic aviation, alongside rising fuel costs affecting the sector.
The Minister assured that future decisions will be made transparently with strong public-private partnerships and sound financial models.
