Government Preparing for Possible El Niño Impact: Prime Minister

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said the government will give special attention to food security, water management and energy management in preparation for the possible effects of the El Niño weather phenomenon.

She made the remarks at a Colombo District Coordination Committee meeting held at the Colombo District Secretariat.

The meeting reviewed progress on several development programmes, including rural road projects, disaster mitigation initiatives and the Praja Shakthi programme.

The Prime Minister stressed the need to prepare for both the direct and global impacts of El Niño. She emphasised the importance of public awareness campaigns on efficient energy use and resource management.

She also called for greater attention to programmes supporting persons with disabilities, vocational training initiatives and services for senior citizens.
