TVK chief Vijay has been sworn in as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister at 10 am on May 10 after securing the Governor’s approval to form government with backing from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML.

His party, TVK, pulled off a debut performance as the single largest force with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, then nudged itself past the majority line with support from 120 MLAs. That makes him the state’s first non-Dravidian Chief Minister in 59 years, which is either historic change or political mood swing, depending on your tolerance for grand narratives.

Cabinet formation is still a mess in progress. Allies are reportedly lining up demands for key portfolios, including the ever-popular Deputy CM post, because no coalition ever meets a victory without immediately negotiating it down.

Meanwhile, resort politics made a predictable comeback during the final stretch of government formation, because apparently transparency is optional during power handovers.
