New Special Courts to Expedite Case Hearings – Minister Harshana
22-Feb-2026.
Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara announced steps to establish new and special courts to expedite judicial proceedings.
At a media briefing on 19 February, he cited a shortage of qualified experts for chemical analysis as a major cause of delays in court cases.
He noted that while systemic issues cannot be resolved immediately, specialized courts—such as those handling the Easter Sunday terror attacks and corruption cases—have been established to prioritize significant cases.
Decisions on which cases are assigned will be made by the Chief Justice, and the courts will function independently under the Judicial Service Commission.
