Death threat against IGP must be investigated, says Minister Nalinda

Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said that the public death threat issued against the Inspector General of Police (IGP), who has been working with dedication to control crime and the activities of underworld groups in the country, is a serious matter that must be thoroughly investigated.

He made these remarks while speaking to the media on August 11.

He further said that, under ordinary law, when a complaint concerning a death threat is received, it is standard procedure for the police to conduct an investigation and submit a report to court.

“At a time when the IGP is leading efforts to eliminate crime, control underworld groups and prevent drug trafficking in the country, it is unacceptable for someone to publicly and deliberately state that he would be killed on the road and then reiterate such a statement in Parliament. A thorough investigation must be conducted into the matter,” he said.

Meanwhile, steps are being taken to bring criminals hiding overseas back to the country and produce them before court. The courts will determine the legal proceedings and punishments applicable to them. Until the conclusion of the cases, the relevant ministries will provide the necessary facilities without obstruction.

He also said that work to digitise the services of all ministries and departments is progressing rapidly. Since certain specific procedures have to be followed during the procurement process for this purpose, discussions are being held with the National Procurement Commission.

The Ministry of Digitalisation is providing the necessary coordination and leadership for the process. Once the work is completed, more efficient services will be provided to the public, he said.
