‘Praja Shakthi’ Reflects Democratic Values of a People-Centred Government: PM Harini

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya says the Praja Shakthi programme represents an important milestone in demonstrating the democratic values of a people-centred government and aims to identify region-specific economic models to drive village development.

She made these remarks while addressing the launch of the “One Thousand Villages, One Thousand Projects” initiative under the Praja Shakthi National Poverty Eradication Movement in Colombo District on June 2.

The programme, implemented by the Ministry of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment, seeks to promote rural development and enhance public participation in national development.

The Prime Minister stated that Praja Shakthi embodied the principle that governance is not solely the responsibility of the State but a collaborative effort involving government institutions, public officials, and citizens.

“Governance should not be confined to election periods. People must become active participants in governance itself. Through Praja Shakthi, we are institutionalising this concept across all Grama Niladhari divisions,” she said.
