Wind Power and Mineral Sand Protests Continue for 7th Day; Pesalai Villagers Join
12-Aug-2025.

For the seventh consecutive day, residents of Mannar have protested against the second phase of wind power tower construction and mineral sand excavation, despite police protection for transported equipment.
On August 3, large wind turbine parts were brought through Mannar, prompting local opposition.
Protests have since been held in rotation at multiple locations.
On August 9, hundreds of Pesalai villagers joined, traveling by bus to support the demonstrations.
Protesters said existing wind towers have already caused severe hardship to fishermen, elders, children, and pregnant women, and recent development works worsened flooding during rains.
They vowed never to allow mineral sand excavation and called on the President to halt both projects immediately.
