Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa questioned why the President has not condemned what he described as a violation of international law by the United States, despite claiming neutrality in the Middle East conflict.

Speaking in Parliament on March 20, he asked why no official statement has been issued condemning the attack.

He further questioned whether Sri Lanka had been informed, under its maritime agreements with the US, about an attack on an Iranian vessel within Sri Lanka’s economic zone. If not, he argued, it would amount to a breach of agreement.

He rejected claims that military actions are permissible within economic zones, stating that such zones are meant for peaceful activities under international law.

He also criticised the government’s handling of fuel procurement from Russia, noting that a temporary lifting of US sanctions had provided an opportunity that was not effectively utilised.

He warned that declining power generation due to low-quality coal could lead to power cuts, and highlighted the impact of diverting diesel to power plants on public fuel availability.

He called for urgent engagement with the IMF, reduction of fuel taxes, and implementation of poverty alleviation programmes, noting that one-third of the population is already living in poverty.
