United National Party Calls for Unity Among Opposition Parties
18-Oct-2025.
As the political journey of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (United People’s Power) remains with the people, we are ready to face any election. If the government decides to hold the elections, it must immediately announce the date. We are prepared to face any opinion poll or electoral contest, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said.
Speaking to the media after visiting Asgiriya Maha Viharaya in Kandy on October 15 and receiving blessings from the deputy head priest Narambanave Aananda Thera, the Opposition Leader stated the above.
He noted that it was the Samagi Jana Balawegaya that took those who plundered the country to the Supreme Court, leading to those criminals being brought before the law. He added that the government was compelled to abandon its proposed electricity tariff hike because of sustained pressure from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya.
Regarding the government’s attempt to increase electricity tariffs in line with International Monetary Fund conditions, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya opposed that move and he said they would continue to fight alongside the people until tariffs are reduced by 33 percent.
He described the elimination of illicit drug trafficking as a positive objective and said that if any actor achieves that for the good of the country, they will support it. He also stressed the urgent need to prevent the spread of drugs within educational institutions.
Furthermore, he warned that unless relief reaches the microeconomic sectors and economic growth is accelerated, repaying debt by 2028 will become difficult. Therefore, he emphasized the necessity of rapid economic growth.
