Six soldiers have been arrested over the death of a youth who disappeared after being taken to an army camp in Mullaitivu, with three of them produced in court and remanded until August 19.

The Magistrate also ordered that the body be sent for post-mortem examination at Jaffna Teaching Hospital.

Out of five men who went to the army camp, one was later found dead and another hospitalized with severe back injuries.

The incident reportedly began on the night of August 7, 2025, when a soldier phoned a local youth asking him to come to the Muthaiyankaddukulam Left Bank army camp to hand over roof sheets.

The camp was due to be vacated soon, and soldiers were dismantling buildings.

Upon arrival, the five men were allegedly chased and beaten with sticks and rods by soldiers, forcing them toward a pond behind the camp.

One man said he escaped by running away, though over 20 soldiers attacked them.

The next morning, the missing youth’s body was recovered from the pond.

Civilians later blocked an army vehicle demanding justice.

The victim’s brother has lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission.
