Sivagnanam Shritharan, MP for Jaffna District and Chairman of the Parliamentary Group of the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK), has sent an urgent letter to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake requesting an appointment to discuss seven major issues, including initiating talks between the government and representatives of Tamil-speaking people in the North and East to resolve the ethnic problem.

In the letter, he expressed that it would be timely to meet the President in person to discuss the present crises faced by Tamil-speaking people in the North and East, as well as political issues concerning Eelam Tamils.

He hopes the meeting will address matters such as initiating talks for a permanent political solution to the national issue, the release of Tamil political prisoners, the return of state and private lands occupied by the military, resettlement in the Mayiliddy area of Jaffna District, detainees held under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, threats to journalists and independent media, and military interference in civilian affairs that affects daily life.

He concluded by expressing confidence that discussing these matters with the President, who is concerned about fostering reconciliation among Sri Lanka’s ethnic groups, could lead to solutions, and he requested that the meeting be arranged at a convenient time.
