Sajith Meets Ranil; Says Visit Was to Inquire About Former President’s Health

Former President and leader of the United National Party (UNP), Ranil Wickremesinghe, has met with Opposition Leader and leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Sajith Premadasa.

The meeting took place on June 13 at Ranil Wickremesinghe’s private residence on 5th Lane, Kollupitiya, Colombo, and lasted for approximately one-and-a-half hours.

The highly confidential meeting occurred at a crucial juncture in the country’s current political landscape.

Prior to this meeting, on June 12, representatives of Sajith Premadasa, namely SJB Chairman Kabir Hashim, General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara and Lucky Jayawardena, had met Ranil Wickremesinghe at his residence for extensive discussions.

It is learnt that the Sajith-Ranil meeting was a continuation of the understanding reached during those discussions. Sources indicate that the possibility of bringing the SJB and the UNP under a common platform or coordinating future political activities was examined in depth.

Commenting on the meeting, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa told Virakesari that he had met Ranil Wickremesinghe solely to inquire about his health.

He declined to comment on any political matters.

The meeting has generated considerable political speculation, and further announcements from both sides are expected in the coming days.
