Prime Minister Meets UN Assistant Secretary-General Kanni Wignaraja

Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya met Kanni Wignaraja, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), at the Prime Minister's Office on July 31.
Welcoming the UNDP delegation, the Prime Minister expressed appreciation for the organisation's continued support and contribution towards Sri Lanka's sustainable development efforts.
She briefed the delegation on measures being taken to complete projects initiated by previous governments while advancing the policy priorities of the present administration.
Discussions focused on reforms within the public sector, including measures to strengthen transparency, merit-based recruitment and human resource management in the State sector.
The meeting also reviewed the Government's digital transformation initiatives, including the development of digital public infrastructure, digital governance and the use of technology to improve public service delivery.
Ms Wignaraja reaffirmed the UNDP's continued support for Sri Lanka's digital transformation agenda, efforts to restore the economy and initiatives aimed at strengthening economic stability.
The Prime Minister further highlighted the Government's focus on strengthening solid waste management, promoting sustainable environmental resource management, expanding renewable energy generation and accelerating progress towards sustainable development.
She also outlined steps being taken to formulate a comprehensive climate finance strategy to support climate adaptation measures and facilitate low-carbon development.
The UNDP delegation presented updates on its ongoing initiatives to identify the skills required for future labour markets and to support workforce development aligned with emerging economic demands.
The two sides also exchanged views on enhancing Sri Lanka's care economy, increasing women's labour force participation and promoting inclusive economic growth.
