Motor Vehicle Taxes Must Be Reduced Immediately: Importers’ Association
28-Dec-2025.
Ceylon Motor Vehicle Importers Association President Prasad Manage called on the government to reduce taxes imposed on vehicles purchased by the middle class.
Speaking at a press conference on Dec 26, he said vehicle purchases have declined sharply following recent natural disasters, with many customers canceling pre-orders.
He noted that a monthly tax of 3 percent is imposed if imported vehicles are not cleared within a specified period and urged the government to suspend this levy under current conditions.
Manage said middle-class vehicle ownership has become a distant dream, pointing out that taxes on small vehicles have risen to as much as Rs. 4 million.
