Ministerial-Level Measures to Conduct Provincial Council Elections
07-Jul-2025.

Arrangements have been made to conduct the Provincial Council elections. Certain legal decisions must be made in relation to the Provincial Council election process.
Accordingly, preliminary measures have been initiated at the ministerial level, and discussions will be held transparently with all stakeholders, said Minister of Provincial Councils, Local Government and Public Administration, Chandana Abeyratne.
Responding to a question about the Election Commission’s statement that the government must facilitate conditions to conduct the elections, he said:
“In recent months, special attention was given to conducting Local Government elections. Preliminary steps for Provincial Council elections have been taken at the ministry level.”
“Special consideration has been given to the proposed amendment by former Minister Faiszer Musthapha and the private member’s motion by former MP M.A. Sumanthiran.”
“We have emphasized in the election declaration that Provincial Council elections must be conducted without delay. The government is responsible for safeguarding the people’s democratic rights. We fully cooperated with the Election Commission to hold the Local Government elections in compliance with the Supreme Court’s directive.”
“There are certain issues and shortcomings in the Provincial Council system that must be resolved. Acting from a narrow political position will harm the administrative framework. Therefore, we will engage in transparent dialogue with all parties about the Provincial Council system,” he said.
