Human Remains Found in Sampur

In the coastal region of Sampur in Trincomalee, human skeletal remains were discovered during a demining operation, prompting an immediate suspension of the work. 

The demining had been ongoing in the area near the Sampur Children’s Park.
 
For the past week, the Mines Advisory Group (MAG), a demining organization, had been stationed in the area with the necessary equipment and had commenced operations.

On July 20, during the excavation, human remains were unearthed. In response, the excavation work was halted pending a court order to determine the next legal steps. 

Notably, the excavation site is located near the memorial built in remembrance of the Sampur massacre, making the discovery highly significant and potentially linked to past conflict-related atrocities.
