The Supreme Court has accepted for hearing a fundamental rights petition filed by former Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan (Pillayan), alleging that the CID violated his fundamental human rights by arresting and detaining him under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

The petition, filed on July 23, was considered by a bench comprising Justices Kumudini Wickramasinghe, Sobitha Rajakaruna, and Sampath Wijeratne, and scheduled for October 31.

Appearing on behalf of Pillayan, President’s Counsel Manohara de Silva stated that on April 8, Pillayan was arrested by the CID at his party office in Batticaloa.

He was detained under the PTA without being informed of the specific reasons for the detention.
