Deputy Minister of Labour Mahinda Jayasinghe stated that the digitalization of the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) has been implemented to address longstanding issues faced by service providers and beneficiaries, noting that more than 22,000 institutions had previously failed to remit EPF contributions.

He made these remarks while addressing the EPF digitalization launch event held on 29 Dec.

The Deputy Minister said the world is advancing rapidly through digital transformation, while Sri Lanka continues to lag behind in comparison. As a result, the government has placed increased emphasis on digitalization. During EPF registration, beneficiaries and service providers faced significant difficulties, including excessive time spent on registration and processing.

These obstacles will now be removed, he said, adding that the ministry receives daily complaints regarding EPF-related issues, and solutions to the identified problems will be implemented gradually.

Responding to a question raised in Parliament on a previous occasion, the Ministry of Labour had disclosed that nearly Rs. 35 billion in EPF funds could not be claimed, and that over 22,000 institutions had failed to make EPF contributions. The Deputy Minister said the digitalization initiative is expected to resolve these issues.

He added that all future processes will be carried out transparently, noting that Rs. 25.5 billion has been allocated for the digital economy. Through this initiative, Sri Lanka will be able to progress alongside global digital developments, while creating an environment that enables workers to access services more easily.
