In light of the controversies surrounding the Mannar wind power project, it has been decided to temporarily halt development activities.

This decision was made during a meeting led by the Minister of Power, where it was also agreed that a solution should be found through discussions with all stakeholders.

Additionally, it was agreed in the meeting that a special discussion on the issue would be held under the leadership of the President in two weeks.

A special discussion on the issues related to the Mannar Wind Power Project and the Ilmenite mineral resources was held on August 7, 2025, in the parliamentary premises, under the leadership of Power Minister Kumar Jayakody.

The meeting included participation from representatives of the Vanni District, civil society groups, and residents of Mannar.

During the session, the impact of the wind power project on the human and natural environment of the Mannar District was thoroughly discussed. Local residents outlined the damage already caused by the initial stages of the project.

The Minister decided that until a consensus is reached through dialogue with all parties, project activities would be suspended. It was also resolved that a special discussion with the President would be held after two weeks to assess the way forward.

Authorities were instructed not to transport project-related equipment to the island but to store them safely in an alternative location until a final decision is made.
