Canadian Liberal MP Juvana Nathan, whose family hails from Sri Lanka, has said that actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan continues to inspire Tamils across generations by pursuing her career with confidence, integrity and courage despite intense public scrutiny.

Her remarks came amid debate on social media following recent comments by the Hollywood actress of Sri Lankan Tamil heritage about her identity.

In a social media post addressing Ramakrishnan’s achievements, Nathan said it was a source of pride to see younger generations and artists from the Eelam Tamil community overcome numerous obstacles and make progress on the global stage.

Nathan noted that Ramakrishnan had continued to pursue her career with self-confidence, honesty and courage despite facing intense public pressure.

She also observed that discussions about Tamil history, experiences and identity were deeply personal and complex. In public debates, the human emotions and individual experiences of artists could sometimes be overlooked, she said.

Nathan added that Ramakrishnan’s resilience, strong voice and continued public presence served as an inspiration to people across generations.
