Human Rights Group Opposes Deployment of Sri Lankan Troops to Haiti

The International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP) has urged the government to ensure accountability and proper screening before deploying Sri Lankan troops to Haiti for peacekeeping duties.
The organisation said justice must first be delivered to victims of alleged abuses committed by Sri Lankan peacekeepers during previous deployments, and warned that a fresh deployment should not reinforce a culture of impunity.
International human rights organisations have already voiced concerns over the proposed deployment.
In a statement posted on its official X account, the ITJP said it had met United Nations officials to express its concerns. It noted that there has been no clear accountability for previous allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse involving Sri Lankan peacekeepers in Haiti.
The organisation also claimed that the United Nations has no role in screening personnel assigned to the proposed deployment, raising concerns over the absence of an independent human rights assessment and a clearly defined accountability mechanism.
The ITJP stressed that Haiti cannot afford another failed mission and called for credible screening procedures and accountability measures before any Sri Lankan troops are deployed.
