The United National Party has questioned whether the government has taken steps to obtain key investigative materials from the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation, including a 71-page affidavit related to the Easter Sunday attacks.

In a statement issued yesterday, the party noted that the FBI launched an investigation at the request of then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe due to limited investigative capacity in Sri Lanka at the time. It added that the FBI worked alongside Sri Lankan security agencies, and its findings were accepted by local authorities.

The statement further noted that in November 2020, an FBI special agent filed a 71-page affidavit in a US court, followed by criminal proceedings in December against Mohamed Naufer, Mohamed Rizkan and Ahmed Milhan, who were already in custody in Sri Lanka.

The party said all related documentation is currently held by the US Department of Justice and urged the government to formally request access. It questioned whether such a request has been made and, if not, why.

The UNP stressed that full access to these records is necessary to ensure justice for victims.
