No Room to Conceal the Truth About Easter Sunday Attacks, Says Cardinal Ranjith
16-Jun-2026.
Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has declared that there will be no opportunity for murderers and corrupt individuals who have blood on their hands to re-emerge before society as respectable figures. He stressed that any attempt to conceal the truth behind the Easter Sunday attacks would not be tolerated.
He made these remarks during a special religious service held on June 14 in connection with the annual feast of St. Anthony’s Shrine in Kochchikade, Colombo.
The Cardinal noted that following the change of government in September 2024, the new President had assured victims of the Easter Sunday attacks that the truth behind the tragedy would never be hidden. Investigations have since regained momentum.
According to investigators, substantial evidence pointing to a political conspiracy behind the attacks is now being presented before the courts. Matters that were allegedly concealed by those in power at the time are gradually coming to light.
He alleged that certain groups are actively attempting to undermine the investigations through media campaigns, protests and personal attacks, fearing damage to their political image. Efforts to influence the independence of the judiciary and intimidate witnesses were described as unacceptable.
The Cardinal urged the Government, the Attorney General’s Department and security agencies to continue pursuing the truth without yielding to political pressure. He added that those who have committed no wrongdoing should have no reason to fear investigations and should instead cooperate with the process.
He also appealed to anyone possessing further information about the attacks to come forward courageously and testify in the interest of justice and moral responsibility.
