Red Deer to spend $2.9M of federal housing money on permanent supportive housing

The housing accelerator fund saga in Red Deer is coming to a resolution, after Ottawa gave the city the greenlight to spend its $3.1 million grant as part of its now-cancelled $12 million agreement.

The city announced on September 15 that $2.93 million would be used to build permanent supportive housing, following a unanimous council vote. Permanent supportive housing is not available on the market, instead combining long-term housing with ongoing supports that help people maintain stable housing.

“We don't have inventory in the community [of] permanent supportive housing units. We know we need a significant number,” said Mayor Cindy Jefferies.
