Rains shatter Mumbai, Orange alert issued, more than 750 passengers rescued after 2 monorails stuck

Heavy rains have ben battering the financial capital of the country Mumbai City in Maharashtra State in India. 

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert of heavy rains for Mumbai City for August 20. The IMD has issued advisories for people and local authorities to remain cautious as intermittent heavy showers are likely to continue in parts of Mumbai and adjoining districts. 

Nearly 782 people have been rescued on August 19 evening after two overcrowded Monorail trains on elevated tracks got stuck between stations in Mumbai on a day of torrential rains, leading to panic and frantic rescue efforts. 

At least 21 people have died in the last four days due to rain and flood-related incidents across Maharashtra.

12 local train services on the Western Line were cancelled due to heavy waterlogging early Wednesday, the ones running across Churchgate – Dahanu road suburban section have been restarted, with a delay of 20-25 minutes, as per an update shared over X by Western Railways. 

More local trains on Up Fast line are operating with caution and restricted speed, the post stated. 

Meanwhile, the local trains on Central and Harbour Lines are running as per their normal schedule.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘yellow’ alert for Mumbai City indicating light to moderate rainfall for the next three hours. 

The IMD has kept Mumbai under an ‘orange’ alert throughout the day indicating moderate to heavy spell of rainfall that will continue throughout the day along with gusty winds blowing at a speed of 40-50 kmph. 

Amid predictions of rivers breaching the danger levels in Thane, the district Collector declared a leave for all schools and colleges in the city on August 20.

Flight ops likely to be hit: Flight operations are likely to be hit today, with Indian airline IndiGo issuing an advisory for its travelers anticipating air traffic congestion, and requesting passengers to stay updated through its website or mobile application, as well as allow some extra time to commute.

Met department predicted that the intensity of rainfall in the metropolis will go down from August 21.
