I Cannot Guarantee a Pardon: Statement from the Minister of Justice

About 15 Tamil political prisoners have requested presidential pardons.

However, the Minister of Justice and National Unity, Harsha Nanayakkara, clarified that he cannot guarantee such pardons, as the decision lies solely with the President.

He expressed hope that a favorable outcome would be reached.

Responding in Parliament on August 7, to earlier questions raised by MP S. Sritharan, the Minister explained that prisoners held under the Prevention of Terrorism Act are either former members or suspects associated with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Among them are four LTTE suspects, eight LTTE members, three serving life sentences, two life-term convicts under appeal, and two on death row.

Prisoners convicted under the PTA will be released upon completing their sentences, or they may be granted bail through court or appeal procedures.

According to Article 34 of the Constitution, presidential pardons can be issued. Though some have met the Minister to discuss this matter, he emphasized that only the President can make such decisions.
