Ground-Penetrating Radar to be Used at Chemmani Mass Grave
29-Jul-2025.

Advanced Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology is set to be deployed at the Chemmani mass grave site in Jaffna.
Imported from overseas, the GPR will scan a broader area to identify additional potential grave sites, as verified by forensic expert Dr. Somadeva.
The initiative follows calls from both local and international groups to expand the excavation beyond the initially demarcated area.
While AMRI scanners were previously used at sites like Kokku Thoduvai in Mullaitivu, Chemmani will be the first site in Sri Lanka to use GPR technology.
GPR can penetrate concrete and display underground objects and remains, as successfully used in countries like Canada.
Preparations are underway, including clearing of surrounding areas, and experts expect to uncover more remains.
These investigations will proceed with authorization from the Ministry of Defence.
