The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that Sri Lanka has identified five potential sites for its first nuclear power plant, as part of its ongoing efforts to develop a nuclear energy program.

This follows an integrated nuclear infrastructure review mission conducted between July 4 and 18, in response to a request by the Sri Lankan government.

The team, which included experts from Bulgaria and Turkey, assessed progress made by Sri Lanka in implementing the recommendations provided during a similar review in 2022.

According to the IAEA, Sri Lanka has made significant advancements, including the establishment of a nuclear procurement management structure and drafting a comprehensive nuclear law.

The country has also included nuclear power in its long-term national energy plan for 2025–2044.

The nuclear initiative was first approved by the Cabinet in 2010, and a formal implementation body was established in 2019.

Key entities involved include the Ministry of Power and Energy, Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board, Ceylon Electricity Board, and the Nuclear Regulatory Council.
