Heavy rains in Andhra Pradesh, depression to cross the coast at Odisha, north Coastal Andhra

A depression in the northwest-west central Bay of Bengal is set to cross the coast between Odisha and the north coast this afternoon, according to a forecast by the India Meteorological Department. 

Presently the depression is set at situated south-southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha, the system is expected to move northwest and make landfall later today. In anticipation of the cyclonic impact, the coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh are likely to experience strong gusty winds, reaching speeds of 45-55 km/h. 

Warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall have been issued by the Met department in certain areas along the northern coast, with further downpours expected across the remaining coastal districts.   

The Srikakulam district administration has been alerted in response to these warnings, particularly concerning the potential for significant rainfall in the north Andhra districts. Government and private schools, as well as Anganwadi centres, have been closed for the day. 

Authorities have noted a steady increase in flood levels in the Nagavali River. Several recommendations have been recommended by the Union Minister Rammohan Naidu and Minister Atchannaidu to officials in preparation for the expected weather conditions. 

Srikakulam District Collector Swapnil Dinkar Pundkar has issued advisories to fishermen, urging them to refrain from going to sea.

Heavy rains lash across AP due to depression 

Moderate to heavy rainfall was reported in several parts of Andhra Pradesh, particularly in north coastal Andhra Pradesh, over the last 24 hours. 

Normal life was thrown out of gear in areas like Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Narsipatnam, and Bheemunipatnam. At 16 cm, Paderu in Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) district recorded the highest rainfall, followed by Chodavaram in Anakapalli district (14 cm). Low-lying areas in these regions experienced inundation. 

Other areas with significant rainfall include: 13 cm: Bheemunipatnam (Visakhapatnam district), Vepada (Vizianagaram district); 12 cm: Anakapalli (Anakapalli district); 11 cm: Narsipatnam (Anakapalli district), Vizag city; and 10 cm: Yalamanchili (Anakapalli district). 

Rainfall was reported also in parts of Srikakulam, Kakinada, Prakasam, Konaseema, West Godavari, and Parvathipuram Manyam districts. In the Rayalaseema region, 5 cm rainfall was reported in Nandikotkuru (Nandyala district) and Kurnool. Pagidyala (Nandyal district), Nandavaram (Kurnool district), and Jupadu Bungalow (Nandyal district) each recorded 4 cm rainfall. Other parts of Rayalaseema experienced light rain and drizzle.

Heavy rain is likely at isolated places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP) & Yanam and south coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP). Thunderstorms with lightning are expected over NCAP & Yanam, SCAP, and Rayalaseema. Strong winds of 50-60 kmph are also likely in isolated areas of these regions.
