Parliamentary Debate on Removal of Police Chief Scheduled for August 5

Secretary General of Parliament Kushani Rohanadeera announced that a debate regarding the removal of IGP T.M.W. Deshabandu Tennakoon, under Section 17 of the Removal of Officers Act No. 5 of 2002, will be held on August 5.

This decision was made during a Parliamentary Business Committee meeting chaired by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena. Parliament will convene on August 5, 6, and 7. August 8 is a Poya (public holiday), so Parliament will not meet that day.

On August 5 (Tuesday), from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m., time is allocated for questions under Standing Order 22. From 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., time is allotted for oral questions, and from 11:00 to 11:30 a.m., for questions under Standing Order 27(2).

The debate on the removal of the IGP will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., followed by a vote.

From 4:15 to 5:30 p.m., time is allocated to debate regulations under the Anti-Dumping and Countervailing Duties Act and the Judicature Act. A debate on an opposition adjournment motion will follow from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m.

On August 6 (Wednesday), the same format will follow, and discussions will be held on the amendment bills related to the Electricity Act, Tobacco Tax Act, and Tea (Tax and Export Control) Act.

On August 7 (Thursday), from 11:30 a.m. to noon, the Coinage (Amendment) Bill will be passed without debate. From noon to 5:30 p.m., a government adjournment motion on the country’s current economic condition will be debated.
