The US Secret Service late on Mar 9 shot an armed man outside the White House following a confrontation. President Donald Trump was not in the White House at the time of the incident as he was spending the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
Local authorities tipped Secret Service officials on Saturday that a suicidal person may be travelling to Washington from Indiana, the Secret Service said, adding that the suspect's car was found a block from the White House. They also saw the man on foot, which matched their description.
The man, whose identity was not known, brandished a firearm as officers approached him and shots were fired shortly after midnight (local time). He was taken to an area hospital and his condition was not known, the Secret Service said.
