Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Private Limited, which contributed Rs 584 crores in electoral bonds to the BJP, acquired electoral bonds worth Rs 140 crore in April 2023, a month prior to being granted a Rs 14,400-crore tunnel project in Mumbai, as per data disclosed by the Election Commission.
Sources informed India Today TV that the Hyderabad-based company, Megha Engineering (MEIL), known for its substantial electoral bond purchases, donated a total of Rs 966 crore via electoral bonds, with approximately 60 percent of its contributions directed towards the BJP.
In 2023, MEIL secured the contract for the Thane-Borivali twin tunnel project, valued at Rs 14,400 crores, which traverses beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Mumbai.
Notably, MEIL had purchased electoral bonds worth Rs 140 crore a month before clinching the contract. Furthermore, in a collaborative effort, the company obtained the contract for a bullet train station at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai.
According to insiders, MEIL faced penalties from the Mumbai civic body for delays in an unrelated infrastructure project within the city.
The company had been contracted for a road concreting project worth approximately Rs 1800 crores and incurred penalties from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) due to project delays.
Megha Engineering collaborates with civic bodies such as the BMC, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), as well as numerous central government engineering ventures.
Besides the BJP, a significant portion of electoral bonds purchased by MEIL was allocated to the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS), amounting to Rs 195 crores.
Moreover, the company holds multiple engineering contracts with the Telangana government.
MEIL contributed Rs 85 crores to the DMK in Tamil Nadu, Rs 37 crores to the YSR Congress Party in Andhra Pradesh, Rs 28 crores to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), and Rs 5 crores to the Janata Dal (S) through electoral bonds.
Furthermore, the company made an Rs 18 crore donation to the Congress party.
