Land Gazette Notification Expected Soon: Gajendrakumar
12-Jun-2025.

Justice Minister Harsha Naanayakkara has informed Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, leader of the Tamil National People's Front (TNPF) and Member of Parliament, that the date for the cancellation of the gazette notification concerning lands in the North will be announced after discussions with Land Minister Laalgandha.
It was stated in Gazette No. 2430, published on March 28 under Section 4 of the Government's Land (Determination of Title) Ordinance, that if no one claims ownership of a total of 5,940 acres of land in the Northern Province within three months, they would be declared state lands.
However, due to strong opposition demanding the complete cancellation of this gazette notification, the Cabinet decided to revoke it. Despite this, the gazette notification for its cancellation has not yet been issued.
Similarly, during the parliamentary session on the 3rd of this month, no special statement was made regarding this matter, contrary to the assurance given by Land Minister Laalgandha during a meeting between the Prime Minister and Tamil representatives from the North and East.
In this context, Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam stated last Saturday that he had requested Justice Minister Harsha Naanayakkara via text message to announce a specific date for the cancellation of this gazette notification. He also mentioned that he would be discussing this with Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya on June 9.
When Gajendrakumar was questioned about this, he stated that Justice Minister Harsha Naanayakkara had replied to his text message, assuring him that he would speak with Land Minister Laalgandha and take appropriate action regarding the matter.
Gajendrakumar further added that he had also informed the Prime Minister's Secretary about this issue, who promised to look into it immediately.
