Kandeepan Elected as Mayor of Vavuniya Municipal Council

Sundaralingam Kandeepan, a member of the Democratic Tamil National Alliance, has been elected as the Mayor of Vavuniya Municipal Council with a majority of one vote.

At the same time, Paramaswaran Kartheepan, also a member of the Democratic Tamil National Alliance, has been elected as the Deputy Mayor.

The election for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Vavuniya Municipal Council was held on 16 June 2025, under the leadership of the Northern Province Commissioner of Local Government, Mrs. Devananthini, at the Vavuniya Municipal Council Assembly Hall.

The selection process for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor was conducted through an open ballot.

In the mayoral vote, Su. Kandeepan, representing the Alliance, secured 11 votes, while Sivasothy Sivasankar, representing the National People's Power, received 10 votes. Based on this result, Su. Kandeepan of the Sanghu Alliance was declared the newly elected Mayor.

Following this, the election for the Deputy Mayor was held. Paramaswaran Kartheepan, contesting on behalf of the Democratic National Alliance, received 11 votes, while independent candidate Sivasubramaniam Premadas received 10 votes. Consequently, Paramaswaran Kartheepan of the Democratic National Alliance was elected Deputy Mayor.
