Amnesty International has called on the Sri Lankan government to ensure that the excavation of the Chemmani Sindhupathi Hindu Cemetery mass grave is conducted according to international standards and with full transparency.
The organization also urged the government to allocate adequate funding and resources for the effort.
In a statement issued during the ongoing excavation of what is believed to be a second mass grave at the Chemmani site, Amnesty International said:
"The excavation of this second mass grave is an important step toward uncovering the truth and delivering justice for the victims and their families."
The organization stressed that the process must adhere to international forensic and investigative standards. It emphasized the importance of transparency, including allowing affected parties and the media to visit the site and receive regular updates on the progress of the excavation and related investigations.
Furthermore, Amnesty International underscored the need for the government to take all necessary steps to secure and protect the excavation site.
